Money Saving Tips for Going Non-Toxic

Making the switch to natural, non-toxic products when it comes to beauty, skincare and household items can get expensive and overwhelming. Especially when starting out, there are a lot of different options out there and it’s hard to know where to begin and whether or not you are going to like a certain product before you try them out. Here are just a few tips on how to try new products and make the switch without spending a fortune.

Take Advantage of Free Samples

Free samples are my favorite! They are a great way to try new products before spending the money for full sizes. Instagram is a great way to discover companies that give out free samples. Some require you to pay shipping, others send free samples with an order, or some just send samples for free. Here are just a few that I have taken advantage of:

The Honest Co. Personal Care & Home Cleaning Essentials Trial includes shampoo + body wash, face + body lotion, hand soap, healing balm and multi surface cleaner. Just pay $5.95 for shipping. Note: You will get automatically enrolled in their subscription service which I actually used a few times to stock up on products, but it’s very easy to cancel if you wish to do so. You can push out the subscription as far as you want too, so you don’t have to place an order every month. I also blogged about the Honest Beauty Skincare Trial here.

Farmstead Apothocary Free Sample Pack of their Body Butter, Body Lotion and Face Cream (limit one per household) & no shipping costs!

Citrine Natural Beauty Bar They always include complimentary samples with your purchase which is fun, but just recently they started a Sample Program where you can choose samples of your choice.

Subscribe to Green Beauty Boxes

Green Beauty Boxes are a great way to discover newer non-toxic and natural skincare and makeup products. I have tried a few of these below and the rest I have heard great reviews about. Before I subscribe to a box, I always check their banned ingredients list or their product qualification criteria to make sure it aligns with what I’m looking for. This way I have the utmost confidence that the products are properly vetted and do not contain harmful ingredients that I normally try to avoid.

Whole Foods recently released their limited edition clean beauty bag. They release them every year around this time in stores in limited quantity. This year’s contained $90 worth of clean beauty products for $18 dollars. They also ran a special at the same time for their third annual beauty week where all in store cosmetics and facial care were 25% off.

Enter Giveaways on Instagram

Green bloggers and brands do giveaways on Instagram all the time and it’s usually as easy as following the brand and tagging a friend or two in the comments. I haven’t been super successful with these, but hey it’s always worth a shot right?

Look Out For Promotions & Sign Up For Mailing Lists

Some great green beauty brands like 100% Pure for example run some amazing promotions. They recently had one where if you spent $55, you could get your hands on a 6 piece gift set for free plus free shipping. This is a great way to try new products and a crazy good deal! They usually do these type of promotions a few times a year and I’m always on the lookout because they have limited quantity and you have to act fast.

Join mailing lists for the brands you are interested in trying or already love so you can stay on top of their special discounts and promotions.

You can also just scroll through #greenbeauty on Instagram and look for new brands and sales 😉 There are some great Spring Sales happening right now!

Roam The Aisles of Marshalls & TJ Maxx

I have been very successful at discovering some great non-toxic products at Marshalls and TJ Maxx. I always bring my phone along and pull up the ThinkDirty app to check on the toxicity level of new products I haven’t heard of before.

My local stores often have Honest Co. products including shampoo, conditioner, bubble bath, handsoap and toothpaste. I have found Schmidts and other natural deodorant brands. These stores are also great when you are looking for serums and oils. I always go here for Vitamin C serum and Rosehip Oil and can usually fine ones that are cold-pressed and organic.

I always check the household aisle and have found some great all natural dishwashing soap and laundry detergent from brands like Molly’s Suds.

These stores are also great for other green, non-toxic items like toys, organic sheets and bedding, organic baby clothes, cleaning supplies etc. You just have to put in a little work and browse all the aisles to find these hidden gems.

Hope this gave you some good ideas!

33 Weeks Pregnant

IMG_7572.JPG

I’m a little behind posting this!

Due Date: April 25, 2017

How far along: 33 weeks

Size of baby: A Stalk of Celery (17.2 inches and 4.19 pounds)

How many weeks to go: 7 weeks!

About baby: Baby boy is keeping eyes open while awake. The bones are hardening and baby is going through major brain development. Baby may grow up to a full inch this week. At this point, he has developed his own immune system, which means he will be better prepped to fend off germs on the outside.

Maternity clothes: Dresses are my go-to and most comfortable attire right now. Thank goodness for the beautiful AZ weather lately.

Stretch marks: No stretch marks! I am still using THE BEST Baby Belly Butter by Nature Bare Body Care. Check out my review here.

Sleep: Sleep is still a big challenge for me. Tossing back and forth from side to side. I have been using the Organic Snoogle Pregnancy Pillow with other pillows which has definitely helped me stay comfortable in one place. I also sleep a lot better after a prenatal yoga class.

Best moment of this week: My Baby Shower! It was wonderful. I felt so much love and support and my girlfriends did a great job of throwing a nautical themed shower that was better than I could have ever envisioned. We got the sweetest little gifts for Baby Lane and feel so blessed and grateful.

babyshower

I also found a new chiropractor that specializes in the Webster technique that is specifically for pregnant mamas. She is great and super knowledgeable. It was so comforting to find her. Baby is still right side up so I’m hoping consistently visiting this chiropractor will help get him to turn.

Miss anything: Champagne!

Movement: Lots of visible movement now. I can tell he is running out of room in there though. The belly is getting a lot harder and tighter.

Food cravings: Sweets…shakes and ice cream

Anything making you queasy or sick: When he starts to move a lot I start to feel a little queasy. I haven’t really been into eating meat lately so I have to consciously make sure I am getting enough plant based protein.

Gender: BOY

Wedding rings on or off: On, but getting tight.

Mood: Happy and excited to meet our little guy!

Favorite pregnancy or baby product: I received some awesome samples I am loving of the Beauty Counter Baby Line from @beautycounterbymeganhorton  Thanks Megan!

I also ordered this natural, fragrance-free baby powder from Amazon that got great reviews, Nature’s Baby Organics Silky Dusting Powder.

Looking forward to: My Breastfeeding 101 class this week at Modern Milk. If you are an expecting or current mama in AZ, Modern Milk has great educational and fitness classes if you want to check them out 🙂

Also looking forward to wrapping up the nursery. Furniture and last minute items have been arriving this week and I’m so excited to have everything together and ready soon.

Lots of love and good health,

Rustic Maka Detox Underarm Care System Review

I started trying different natural, aluminum-free deodorants last May. You can check out one of my first posts on choosing natural deodorant over conventional brands here.  I wouldn’t say the transition was the easiest or most pleasant for me. For the first few months, I definitely noticed that I was starting to smell mid-day and I somewhat shrugged it off and just figured… maybe this is just how natural deodorant is, maybe I picked the wrong kind, maybe it just doesn’t last as long and since it’s not an antiperspirant, maybe I’m just going to sweat a lot and sweat smells… While some of that is true, looking back, what I didn’t take into account during the process was the fact that my underarms were detoxing. Detoxing from over 15 years of using aluminum deodorants and antiperspirants. Detoxing the chemicals, dead skin cells, clogged pores and hair shafts that had built up over the years in my underarm area.

Enter Rustic Maka’s DETOX – Underarm Care System™ which is designed to accelerate the detox process during the initial transition from conventional antiperspirants, or reoccurring detox effects after a lifestyle-changing event. Boy, I wish I would have had this back then!

All DETOX kit ingredients are specifically selected for their highest nutrient content and purifying properties for maximum skin benefit and rejuvenation. The 3-step system is formulated to work in synergy to leave your delicate underarm skin feeling cleansed, balanced and nourished, and to get you on your way to enjoy the benefits of natural deodorants. YES!

When I did learn about this detox kit/system, although it was months and months after my initial transition, I knew I still wanted to and had to try it out! My underarms have always been particularly delicate and sensitive… prone to ingrowns, skin build up and irritation, sometimes to the point where I have to avoid tank tops. Maybe this was the answer to finally making an underarm change for the better.

So what does the detox system entail? 3 super easy and simple steps! Cleanse, Exfoliate and Balance. The steps and my experience are outlined below.

Step 1: Cleanse

Soap

Activated Charcoal Soap is a non-drying natural soap fortified with powerful magnet-like properties of Activated Charcoal and mineral-rich Kaolin clay. Designed to effectively remove impurities this potent combination leaves your skin feeling cleansed and refreshed. The nourishing blend of olive, coconut and sustainable palm oils is suitable for the most sensitive underarm area, while Grapefruit and Spearmint essential oils energize the senses with a refreshing zing.

Unique, mineral-rich fibers of Konnyaku plant infused with activated charcoal make the Activated Charcoal Konjac Sponge an ideal companion to gently cleanse and remove build-up without stripping the delicate underarm skin.

Working in unison, Activated Charcoal Soap + Activated Charcoal Konjac Sponge provide a gentle clean with powerful results.

Use: Twice a day (Morning & Evening)

This step is my favorite. I have fallen in love with this charcoal soap and confession: I use it all over my body, not just on my underarms! The soap is just so hydrating and makes your skin feel so good. It doesn’t hurt that it smells great too. The Konjac Sponge really makes a little go a long way and it lathers up nicely.

Step 2: Exfoliate

Clay.jpg

Purifying Clays is a powerful, water-activated exfoliant that utilizes purifying effects of Kaolin and Bentonite clays to remove dead skin build-up and promote natural skin renewal process. Mined in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, mineral-rich Rhassoul clay makes an ideal companion to fortify and stimulate the skin with high magnesium, potassium and calcium content. Vast absorbent powers of Bamboo Charcoal detoxify, while a blend of nutrient-rich botanical extracts combined with soothing Rice flour bring forth skin’s impurities and nourish the underarm area. These carefully selected, high-performing ingredients help accelerate the detox process and leave the skin softened and cleansed.

Use: Twice a week (Evening)

I think this step was so key for my underarms since they are prone to skin build up and ingrowns. We often remember to exfoliate our face, but we forget that our underarm skin needs gentle exfoliation too, especially with course hair growing there! I felt like this has helped the condition of my underarms so much. They are less red and irritated after shaving and just feel smoother and look healthier overall.

Step 3: Balance

serum.jpg

Balance it all with a vitamin-rich BALANCE – Antioxidant Serum. Carefully formulated with potent, plant-based ingredients with one goal in mind – balance over-stimulated skin.

A nourishing blend of Moringa and Rose Hip oils specifically selected to soothe, harmonize and rejuvenate even the most delicate skin. Deeply hydrating and restorative powers of Black Cumin and Camellia oils drench and infuse the skin with highly concentrated Vitamin A, C and E. A silky application makes this serum an ideal companion for over exerted skin.

Use: Daily (Evening)

Another confession, this serum is great for underarms, true, but I use it on my face, neck and arms too! I was already a big fan of rose hip oil, but this combines rose hip with some other amazing vitamin and antioxidant rich ingredients. It has been super soothing for my underarms overnight. Little did I know that I was making a big mistake by putting my deodorant on at night after my nighttime shower. This is when you underarms need to breathe and rejuvenate and this serum helps them do just that!

Overall Thoughts:

This detox system is everything! A big winner in my book…my underarms have never been in such great condition… It really does work and I have only been using it for a little over a month now! The kit also comes with their Pachy deodorant which in combination with the detox system, has been working really well for me. No mid-day smells and I stay pretty dry throughout the day. Their deodorant scents are so refreshing. I have tried the lavender and the lemonade and it’s hard to pick a favorite between the two.

A huge bonus of this kit is that you can use the products for other places on the body, not just the underarms! I love multi-use products! Like I said earlier in the post, looking back, I would have loved having this when I first made the transition to natural deodorants. If you are looking to make that transition or if you have any underarm issues like I did, you have to check out this amazing detox system!

Let me know if you have any questions about my experience.

Lots of love and good health,
