Newborn Must-Haves: 1-2 Months

2017-05-20_0038Lane is 2 months old today so I thought I would put together my newborn must-haves that have gotten us through these first months.

Earth Mama Angel Baby Bottom Balm

ABBBIn the first few weeks, poor Lane had some very raw skin within his cute little leg/groin rolls. To be honest I didn’t know if I should put baby powder on it to keep it dry or something else to heal. Enter Earth Mama Angel Baby Bottom Balm, the correct choice. The raw, peeling skin healed so fast, and you could tell he loved it and it was soothing for him the moment I put it on.

Swaddles

pod ollie

All the swaddles! Haha, but really, swaddles have been life savers. We have tried a few different ones but the ones we have liked the most are the Ollie Swaddle and the SwaddleMe Pod for newborns. The one thing about the Ollie Swaddle that I don’t like is the velcro is soo loud! It’s really startling to him sometimes in the middle of the night. What’s great about the Ollie, is it will grow with him (which makes the pricepoint somewhat justifiable). The SwaddleMe Pod is awesome because it zips up so easily and you can even just unzip the bottom for a quick mid night diaper change. He will outgrow that one pretty soon though. I think these were the winners for us mostly because of their similar stretchy, lightweight, breathable fabric.

iLuvBamboo Waterproof Changing Pad Liners

liners

These liners are meant to go on your changing pad, however I use them all over the house. If he is downstairs with us on the couch, I put one of these liners down and same thing on our bed…then I can change him wherever and also not have to worry if there is an accident. I put him on these wherever he sleeps in case he spits up or has a blow out…much easier clean up.

Portable Nightlights

lightAdd these to the list of things no one tells you that you need for a newborn. Portable nightlights! My husband and I got in so many silly mid night arguments over turning on lights. I couldn’t see what I was doing when I was trying to change the baby or breastfeed, and he thought my phone light was too bright or would turn off other lights that I had just turned on. It’s pretty funny now thinking back on this. This mini nursing light is awesome! You can even clip it on you and it turns off automatically. I think it’s good to have a portable nightlight for your changing table as well, but we are still on the hunt for the right one to put there.

Bath Sponge

SpongeYes, there are some pretty cool fancy baby baths out there right now, even ones that make sure the temperature is just right…But we have absolutely loved this really affordable and easy bath sponge to line the bathroom sink during these early days when he is so small. He seems comfortable and we save a lot of water bathing him in the sink versus the tub.

Washable Organic Bamboo Nursing Pads

NP

These nursing pads are the best and most absorbent. The Bamboobies ones while not as thick and a little more discreet, could not keep up with my leaky boobs, especially at night.

Gentle Baby, Lavender & Tummygize Essential Oils

GBUThe Gentle Baby blend and Lavender essential oils have been such lifesavers for all of us. I typically diffuse GB during the day for a more relaxing environment and then Lavender at night to encourage good sleep. Young Living recommends waiting until babies are 6 months before applying oils topically, but I have felt comfortable applying Gentle Baby as well as Tummygize to the bottom of Lane’s feet as long as they are heavily diluted with coconut oil. These have helped so much with his fussiness due to gas and other things. Make sure you consult with your pediatrician and research proper dilution before using EOs with babies.

Aden & Anais Swaddle Blankets

swaddlesOh you thought we were done talking swaddles? Nope! Can’t forget to mention Aden & Anais Swaddles. Not the regular muslin ones! You have to get the organic bamboo ones or the ones that say silky soft. There is a huge difference in the feel between these and the regular ones. Trust me! We use these blankets for everything but swaddling haha! We put it in the carseat to protect his legs from the sun, or over the carseat to block the sun but let air through since they are super lightweight…as a nursing cover, burp cloth… They really are the best blankets and get better with each wash.

Fridababy NailFrida SnipperClipper Set

frida babyThis set includes a uniquely designed nail clipper with a safety spyhole that allows you to see exactly what you’re cutting so you’re not totally freaked out that you might nick your baby’s precious little fingers. It’s curved, overlapping blades allow for safe, smooth and silent snipping. It also comes with a uniquely shaped s-file which is perfect for newborn nails. Lane’s nails grow like crazy so these tools have gotten good use.

Onesies That Wrap or Zip

BBNo one likes putting those regular onesies on. Not you, not baby. Even if you know the baby life hack that you can put it on from the bottom up and don’t need to put it over their head, they are still annoying. These wrap onesies from H&M are game changers and bonus they are made with conscious organic material. And if you are gonna do the full jumpers with the feet, get the ones that zip like this one by Burt’s Bees versus the ones that snap. It will save you so much time and hassle especially during the night.

Hope these are helpful for a new mama or mama-to-be out there 😉

Ecocentric Mom May Box Review

USE THISEcocentric Mom is a subscription box inspired by green living! Each month they deliver thoughtfully curated boxes designed to help busy moms discover safe (and fun!) eco-friendly products for themselves and their babies up to age two. I absolutely loved this box! Fun stuff for mama and something snuck in for baby too! Subscription boxes like this one are a great way to discover new brands especially when just starting to make the switch to non-toxic products.

Organic Fiji Fragrance Free Face & Body Lotion

This fragrance free lotion made with raw, cold pressed, extra virgin, organic coconut oil  is great for those who prefer a neutral aroma and is ideal for even the most sensitive skin: perfect for baby skin or tender skin conditions. This lotion definitely was soothing and moisturizing and didn’t feel too heavy on the skin, but personally I like a little natural fragrance in my lotion. I actually added a drop of Stress Away essential oil (one of my favorites) to this and it was perfect. They do have some fun, natural fragrance options available as well like Pineapple Coconut, Pink Grapfruit and Lemongrass Tangerine.

Z Skin Cosmetics Simply Organic Sunblock SPF 45

With simple ingredients like zinc oxide, raspberry, carrot, lemon, citronella, peppermint, orange, kiwi and tangerine, this lightweight fruity sunblock smells amazing and doesn’t leave that yucky white residue. And bonus, this sunblock also doubles as a natural insect repellent. I love 2 in 1 products like this! This has been an everyday AM staple since I got it for my daily early morning walks with baby boy.

Seeds Now! Basil Italian Large Leaf Seeds

You can grow your own organic garden with the Seeds Now! collection of pure non-genetically modified seeds. Their seeds are 100% non-hybridized, 100% heirloom/open-pollinated, and 100% raw & un-treated. These seeds actually inspired me to get more seeds and grow more at my home. It was almost ridiculous how easy it was. Before I knew it, I had sprouts and I almost have full basil leaves now (see picture below). No green thumb needed. How awesome?! On their website they have lots of affordable sampler seed packs that you can try!

GoumiKids Goumimitts

Honestly these baby mitts are my favorite item in the whole box and they aren’t even for me, but they are amazing for newborns. These little mitts are machine-washable, 70% bamboo/30% organic cotton blend is breathable, naturally antimicrobial and environmentally sustainable. They stay on which is hard to say when it comes to baby mitts and lastly, they have a cool high contrast print that stimulates baby’s brain. How cool is that?! I’m so glad I found this brand and can’t wait to order some of their other equally awesome baby items.

YumEarth Organic Sour Twists

Confession: I live for sour candy and devoured these seconds after I opened the box. I try not to eat conventional sour gummy candy often because of all the hidden nasty ingredients so it’s nice to know there is a better alternative available. These did not disappoint! Vegan, nut free, non-GMO, gluten free, and USDA organic, free of artificial dyes and flavors. These were watermelon lemonade flavor and I can’t wait to get more. They have a super helpful “Where To Buy” link on their website so you can easily find them at a store near you.

Visha Skin Care Bump 2 Baby Body Balm

A multitasking body balm that is 5 products in one. It encourages skin’s natural elasticity, soothes and relieves dry skin and eczema, helps minimize emerging stretch marks, moisturizes and protects sensitive and delicate skin, helps strengthen thinning skin. This felt so soothing on my postpartum delicate belly skin. The small sample wasn’t really enough for me to see it work wonders or live up to its claims, but I loved the feeling of this lotion/balm.

Pair’d Beauty Bath Bomb

Not all bath bombs are created equal. Actually, most are very toxic. These are vegan, fair trade, mostly organic and 100% natural. There’s nothing like treating yourself to a nice warm bath after a long day and bath bombs just make the experience even more fun. My bath bomb was the Sweet Breeze…this fizzy bath bomb turns your bath tangerine orange while it releases the scents of Sweet Orange, Lavender and Peppermint. This tired new mama really enjoyed this!

Hope you discovered some great new brands through this review and that you check out Ecocentric Mom’s fun monthly boxes.

Essential Oils 101

I’m sure you’ve heard a few things here and there about essential oils and hopefully you have even used some already! As you know since you are here reading this, I am on a continuous quest to live a more natural, holistic lifestyle and essential oils have fit in perfectly with that goal. I wanted to share a little bit of background information about essential oils and what they do, the different types available out there, my own experience with them, the kind I use and why. So let’s jump in!

What are essential oils?

An essential oil is a volatile substance derived from a plant that contains the natural smell and characteristics of that plant. Essential oils are highly concentrated and more powerful than dried herbs. EOs are distilled from botanicals such as flowers, trees, shrubs, roots, bushes and seeds. They have enhanced lives for thousands of years, offering a variety of benefits from cosmetic and dietary purposes to spiritual and religious use. EOs can offer emotional, physical, and spiritual wellness in a natural way that can be truly life-changing.

How do we use them?

The ways we can use essential oils are truly endless. Most commonly, EOs can be applied topically, directly to the skin neat but more often with a carrier oil such as coconut oil, grapeseed oil, vitamin e oil or olive oil. Certain therapeutic grade EOs can be used internally, mixing 1-2 drops in liquid like water, juice or plant based milk or placed in capsules. They can also be used aromatically and inhaled by diffusing them in your home or office.

What do they do?

What don’t they do is a better question to ask! Depending on the oil you choose, they can be used to help you sleep, to boost your immune system, to purify the air, to give you energy or help you focus, to ease sore muscles, even to cook and clean in your home! I have had a blast discovering new benefits to the oils I currently have on hand. I’ve even incorporated them into my daily skincare and beauty routine! For example, you can add a few drops of Lavender EO to your mascara to help lengthen and strengthen your lashes! I will do another post soon on some other EO hacks like this one.

How did I get started using essential oils?

The studio where I took yoga classes started offering an essential oil yoga class which incorporated different oils throughout the class. I loved the experience and every time I went I learned about a new oil and what it was good for. It was addicting and I truly felt the difference in my body and mind after being exposed to the oils topically and aromatically during class. I was hooked! I had to get my hands on some to use at home. I knew I had seen some at TJ Maxx and they were cheap, but as usual, I wanted to do my research and make sure I was getting quality oils.

Similarly, to what I’ve discovered when searching for natural, non-toxic beauty and skincare products, many essential oils out there, especially the cheap ones on TJ Maxx shelves for example make false claims about their purity, are diluted with synthetic fillers or they are distilled in a way which negatively alters their powerful therapeutic properties. Needless to say I didn’t purchase the cheap TJ Maxx oils and knew I had to keep searching.

What kind do I use?

Young Living! After doing much research, comparisons and reading testimonials and reviews from everyday users, I knew Young Living was the place to get started. Their Seed to Seal promise and process really put my mind at ease. It guarantees the purity and potency of all of their oils because they are involved in the entire process from cultivating the seeds, planting them on their own farms and harvesting, distilling and packaging in house. Extracted through careful steam distillation, resin tapping, and cold pressing, these pure essential oils are far more powerful than the botanicals from which they come.

I started by purchasing their premium starter kit last year and I fell in love. This was such a great way for me to get introduced to the world of oils. I started out slow, as essential oils can be a bit overwhelming at first. I started by diffusing (the kit comes with a diffuser) and then slowly as I learned more about the different benefits of each oil, I began to incorporate them into my daily routine topically and by ingesting them as well. And lately I’ve been discovering new ways to use them around the house and more.

Young Living has an amazing, supportive community and the resources that come with the starter kit as well as the membership are really helpful. When you purchase a starter kit, you automatically become a YL member which allows you to buy more oils at wholesale prices (24% off retail), however there is no obligation to make future purchases and your kit can be a one and done purchase if you choose.

A premium starter kit, which comes with 11 of the most commonly used oils + a diffuser (and more) is the best value & provides you with everything you need to get started. You’ll get over $300 worth of essential oil products for only $160. I thought it was a good deal when I purchased my kit, but now that I have seen all that these oils can do for me, I can tell you with passion that it is an amazing deal.View More: http://everlastinglovephotography.pass.us/oils

Essential oils have been the perfect supplement to my healthy lifestyle and I’m excited and passionate about sharing this information with you! I want everyone to be able to experience the benefits I have. pb3WARNING: You may get addicted to these things!

I have been making these delicious energy balls for years and thought it’s definitely time to share the simple recipe with you guys! These are super easy to make and packed with superfoods, fiber, protein and some fun, sweet stuff too 🙂 I actually love to have these on hand in my fridge when I’m craving a sweet treat, but don’t want to indulge too much. One of these is the perfect fix. TIP: I like to heat mine up in the microwave for 10 seconds so it’s warm and gooey, YUM!

So here’s the Recipe:

2 Cups Oats

1 Cup Peanut Butter or Almond Butter

1 Cup Flax Seed (preferably ground)

1 Cup Chocolate Chips

2/3 Cup Honey

1/8 Cup Chia Seeds

2 Teaspoons Vanilla

Instructions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl.

2. Mix with a spatula until it looks like this

3. Next, take small amounts and form into balls using your hands. Store in a container and place in fridge or at room temperature depending on your preference (my husband likes them cold).

THAT’S IT!

Feel free to get creative with the ingredients and alter the recipe a bit. Maybe use a fun flavored almond or peanut butter, add nuts or maybe even some raisins or other dried fruit.

And while I’m sharing…this is my new favorite honey, probably the best I’ve ever had so definitely check out Buzz & Bloom! Not sponsored, I just really love it 🙂

Enjoy!
