Essential Oils 101

I’m sure you’ve heard a few things here and there about essential oils and hopefully you have even used some already! As you know since you are here reading this, I am on a continuous quest to live a more natural, holistic lifestyle and essential oils have fit in perfectly with that goal. I wanted to share a little bit of background information about essential oils and what they do, the different types available out there, my own experience with them, the kind I use and why. So let’s jump in!

What are essential oils?

An essential oil is a volatile substance derived from a plant that contains the natural smell and characteristics of that plant. Essential oils are highly concentrated and more powerful than dried herbs. EOs are distilled from botanicals such as flowers, trees, shrubs, roots, bushes and seeds. They have enhanced lives for thousands of years, offering a variety of benefits from cosmetic and dietary purposes to spiritual and religious use. EOs can offer emotional, physical, and spiritual wellness in a natural way that can be truly life-changing.

How do we use them?

The ways we can use essential oils are truly endless. Most commonly, EOs can be applied topically, directly to the skin neat but more often with a carrier oil such as coconut oil, grapeseed oil, vitamin e oil or olive oil. Certain therapeutic grade EOs can be used internally, mixing 1-2 drops in liquid like water, juice or plant based milk or placed in capsules. They can also be used aromatically and inhaled by diffusing them in your home or office.

What do they do?

What don’t they do is a better question to ask! Depending on the oil you choose, they can be used to help you sleep, to boost your immune system, to purify the air, to give you energy or help you focus, to ease sore muscles, even to cook and clean in your home! I have had a blast discovering new benefits to the oils I currently have on hand. I’ve even incorporated them into my daily skincare and beauty routine! For example, you can add a few drops of Lavender EO to your mascara to help lengthen and strengthen your lashes! I will do another post soon on some other EO hacks like this one.

How did I get started using essential oils?

The studio where I took yoga classes started offering an essential oil yoga class which incorporated different oils throughout the class. I loved the experience and every time I went I learned about a new oil and what it was good for. It was addicting and I truly felt the difference in my body and mind after being exposed to the oils topically and aromatically during class. I was hooked! I had to get my hands on some to use at home. I knew I had seen some at TJ Maxx and they were cheap, but as usual, I wanted to do my research and make sure I was getting quality oils.

Similarly, to what I’ve discovered when searching for natural, non-toxic beauty and skincare products, many essential oils out there, especially the cheap ones on TJ Maxx shelves for example make false claims about their purity, are diluted with synthetic fillers or they are distilled in a way which negatively alters their powerful therapeutic properties. Needless to say I didn’t purchase the cheap TJ Maxx oils and knew I had to keep searching.

What kind do I use?

Young Living! After doing much research, comparisons and reading testimonials and reviews from everyday users, I knew Young Living was the place to get started. Their Seed to Seal promise and process really put my mind at ease. It guarantees the purity and potency of all of their oils because they are involved in the entire process from cultivating the seeds, planting them on their own farms and harvesting, distilling and packaging in house. Extracted through careful steam distillation, resin tapping, and cold pressing, these pure essential oils are far more powerful than the botanicals from which they come.

I started by purchasing their premium starter kit last year and I fell in love. This was such a great way for me to get introduced to the world of oils. I started out slow, as essential oils can be a bit overwhelming at first. I started by diffusing (the kit comes with a diffuser) and then slowly as I learned more about the different benefits of each oil, I began to incorporate them into my daily routine topically and by ingesting them as well. And lately I’ve been discovering new ways to use them around the house and more.

Young Living has an amazing, supportive community and the resources that come with the starter kit as well as the membership are really helpful. When you purchase a starter kit, you automatically become a YL member which allows you to buy more oils at wholesale prices (24% off retail), however there is no obligation to make future purchases and your kit can be a one and done purchase if you choose.

A premium starter kit, which comes with 11 of the most commonly used oils + a diffuser (and more) is the best value & provides you with everything you need to get started. You’ll get over $300 worth of essential oil products for only $160. I thought it was a good deal when I purchased my kit, but now that I have seen all that these oils can do for me, I can tell you with passion that it is an amazing deal.View More:

If you are interested in ordering and getting started with the very best, highest quality essential oils, you can follow this link to grab your kit. I will get a notification and can send you even more helpful information in addition to what comes with the kit and can even add you to some great Facebook groups that will help you along your oily journey.

Essential oils have been the perfect supplement to my healthy lifestyle and I’m excited and passionate about sharing this information with you! I want everyone to be able to experience the benefits I have. I am happy to share more specifics on my experiences with certain oils you may be interested in indiviidually or answer any questions you may have. Just ask!

Easy No-Bake Peanut Butter & Chocolate Energy Balls

pb3WARNING: You may get addicted to these things!

I have been making these delicious energy balls for years and thought it’s definitely time to share the simple recipe with you guys! These are super easy to make and packed with superfoods, fiber, protein and some fun, sweet stuff too 🙂 I actually love to have these on hand in my fridge when I’m craving a sweet treat, but don’t want to indulge too much. One of these is the perfect fix. TIP: I like to heat mine up in the microwave for 10 seconds so it’s warm and gooey, YUM!

So here’s the Recipe:

2 Cups Oats

1 Cup Peanut Butter or Almond Butter

1 Cup Flax Seed (preferably ground)

1 Cup Chocolate Chips

2/3 Cup Honey

1/8 Cup Chia Seeds

2 Teaspoons Vanilla

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl.

2. Mix with a spatula until it looks like this

3. Next, take small amounts and form into balls using your hands. Store in a container and place in fridge or at room temperature depending on your preference (my husband likes them cold).

Feel free to get creative with the ingredients and alter the recipe a bit. Maybe use a fun flavored almond or peanut butter, add nuts or maybe even some raisins or other dried fruit.

And while I’m sharing…this is my new favorite honey, probably the best I’ve ever had so definitely check out Buzz & Bloom! Not sponsored, I just really love it 🙂

Lot’s of love and good health,

Boosting Your Breakfast

I’ve blogged before about striving for a healthy balance when it comes to the foods I eat. I love pizza and I love sweets, but I try to balance these things with plenty of greens and other superfoods in my daily food intake. I also try to make the most out of my meals, remembering that the true point of food is to fuel our bodies and therefore adding things in that give me the most benefits.

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day so why not make it the healthiest it can be to start your day off right? Breakfast is personally my favorite meal and one I find very easy to really supercharge with adding some healthy boosts.

The following are some extra ingredients I add to common breakfast food items. These ingredients give them a healthy boost and additional benefits. The breakfast items I mention are great alone, but why not make them even healthier?

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil. Oh how we love you and all of the amazing things you can do for us. Coconut oil gets a lot of hot press for DYI beauty, oil pulling, etc. but let’s not forget the benefits of consuming coconut oil in our daily diet.

Coconut oil is a healthy fat…a saturated fat that are known for their ability to increase the healthy cholesterol in your body. There are so many other benefits, but some of my favorites are those that benefit the immune system. Coconut oil is antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral. It is also easy to digest, produces a longer sustained energy and increases your metabolism. Winning!

Add a spoonful or two of coconut oil to a smoothie, to hot coffee or tea. You can even add a spoonful to oatmeal. Lastly, I sometimes use a little coconut oil when cooking up eggs.

Avocado! Another healthy fat… Avocados are a naturally nutrient-dense food and contain nearly 20 vitamins and minerals. Sign me up!

Add avocado to your smoothies. Adding an avocado actually gives smoothies a great smooth and creamy texture. Avocado toast! Spread half an avocado on your bread slices. You can jazz it up with a squeeze of lemon, some pink salt or if you like it spicy, some crushed red pepper. Make a fun Mexican style breakfast bowl, with an egg or two, some veggies, salsa and top it off with some avocado.

Did you know that according to research, out of 26 of the most popular herbs and spices in the world, cinnamon ranks #1 in terms of its protective antioxidant levels? As little as ½ a teaspoon of cinnamon daily can have positive effects on blood sugar levels, digestion, immunity and more. Add it to your coffee, smoothies, oatmeal… I also buy plain organic greek yogurt and add cinnamon to give it some flavor and then throw some fresh berries on top. Save a few calories and consume less sugar than buying and consuming the yogurt with fruit, sugar and other additives.

Like cinnamon, turmeric is a powerful spice with a long list of uses and benefits. It’s known for its antioxidant content and ability to work as an anti-inflammatory in the body. This one you will have to play around with, because some people don’t like the flavor of turmeric, but I don’t really notice it. I add turmeric to my smoothies and coffee and personally love the flavor if I notice it at all.

Bee Pollen, Flax & Chia Seeds

Did you know bee pollen is considered one of nature’s most completely nourishing foods? It contains nearly all nutrients required by humans. About half of its protein is in the form of free amino acids that are ready to be used directly by the body.

Flaxseed is a high-fiber super food! High in omega-3 essential fatty acids or “good fats” that have been shown to have heart healthy effects.

In addition to chia seeds being an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids similar to flax, they are also rich in antioxidants and provide fiber, iron, and calcium.

These are all great to sprinkle on top of yogurt or oatmeal or add to smoothies. You can even whip up your own granola and add flax and chia seeds to some oats and honey.

Spinach & Kale

Spinach and kale both serve as excellent sources of vitamin K, A, and iron. I always add greens to my smoothie. It’s the perfect way to make an average smoothie so much healthier. I strive to get greens into at least 2 out of my 3 meals each day to aid in digestion and to increase overall vitamin and mineral intake. I do not taste the difference when I throw a handful of spinach in my smoothie, but kale does tend to alter the taste a bit if you are sensitive, just an FYI. I also cut up spinach and add it to eggs!

Hope this gives you some new ideas to help you supercharge and make the most out of the most important meal of the day.

Lots of love and good health,

2017 Whole Foods Limited Edition Beauty Bag Favorites

FullSizeRenderAt the end of March, Whole Foods Market announced that their yearly limited edition clean beauty bags were available in stores in limited quantity. They sell for $18 dollars and feature 11 different samples/full size beauty items. I booked it to my local Whole Foods as soon as I heard about it and shockingly, I snagged the very last bag they had!

FYI: Whole Foods quality standards prohibit 75+ ingredients that are commonly found in conventional body care including phthalates, formaldehyde, microbeads, triclosan, oxybenzone, BHT, BHA, aluminum chlorohydrate and many more.

I have reviewed my five favorites from the 2017 beauty bag below:

Andalou Naturals Apricot Probiotic Cleansing Milk:

I was already familiar with this brand and have used and love one of their shampoos. First, this cleanser smells amazing! That was the first bonus as soon as I put it on my skin, like fresh apricots. It is super moisturizing and doesn’t strip the skin at all. If you like the really foamy cleansers, this one is not for you. More of a cleansing lotion, it reminds me of the feeling of Cetaphil if you are familiar, which I used before I realized how bad the ingredients were. Did you know Cetaphil Skin Cleanser scores a 10, the worst possible score for toxicity on the Think Dirty App? It’s full of nasty parabens, and of course is so misleading being advertised as a “gentle” skin cleanser that is dermatologist recommended. This cleansing milk by Andalou is a great natural alternative!

Evan Healthy Wild Carrot Nourishing Eye Balm:

Every time I’ve seen a product for the face in stick form, like sunscreen, blush, bronzer etc. I have steered in the opposite direction. I’ve just never seen or understood the appeal, until this eye balm came into my life! I love love love this stuff! When it comes to under eyes especially, I would have never imagined, but a balm like this is perfect, it glides and hydrates without pulling on the sensitive under eye area. I use this balm on other random dry spots too, like my lips and nose. I had never heard of one of the main ingredients, wild carrot seed oil, but I now know that my skin drinks it up and responds very well to it, nourishing, moisturizing and brightening the area it’s applied to. Other key ingredients are organic sunflower oil, avocado oil, cocoa butter, rosehip and coconut oil. My ride or die under eye care is the coffee bean caffeine eye cream from 100% Pure, but this comes in right at the top with it and I will definitely be purchasing again. I can’t wait to try more products from this brand!

Mineral Fusion Volumizing Mascara in Jet:

I’ve tried a lot of the natural mascaras out there and honestly have had a lot of big fails and flops. This one I have mixed feelings about and here’s why…I love the full bristle brush, it’s awesome and great for creating volume and length. I feel like truly the brush is everything when it comes to mascara. Am I right? This mascara didn’t clump or smudge on me once applied which I also loved and finally it didn’t irritate my eyes which are normally very sensitive… even to more natural products. What I didn’t love? It seemed like after just a couple weeks of using it, the consistency changed a bit and it started to dry out and get a little clumpy on the brush. I know mascara’s shelf life is short in general and I really loved this mascara at first so I may have to give it another shot.

Pacifica Devocean Deeply Devoted Natural Lipstick in Tenderness:

While I always want some kind of color on my lips, I rarely wear lipstick and am more of a lip gloss or tinted balm type of gal. That being said, I really loved the way this lipstick felt on my lips and its beautiful, long lasting color. This color is a perfect rosey nude that is great for anytime wear. Formulated without: Animal ingredients (including carmine, beeswax and lanolin), animal testing, FD&C colors, mineral oil, parabens, phthalates, petroleum, porpylene glycol, SLS, gluten, peanut oil and other ingredients you don’t want on your skin. I am wearing Tenderness in the photo below so you can get an idea of the subtle, but pretty color.

Piece & Co. Beauty Bag:

This bag is gorgeous and unique, so much so that I almost don’t want to use it in fear that something might spill inside and ruin its perfection. I love that the fabrics they use are socially and environmentally responsible. (See picture at top of post) Here’s a bit more about Piece & Co… Piece & Co. is a different kind of textile company. As a social enterprise, Piece & Co. is reimagining the global supply chain while creating high-quality socially and environmentally sustainable fabrics. Piece & Co. enables a network of more than 5,000 artisans in 16 countries to develop their businesses and compete in the global marketplace, impacting over 16,000 dependents worldwide.

From Bolivia to Zambia, Piece & Co. sources material from primarily female-led artisan groups whose traditional textiles are of exceptional quality and beauty. By connecting these artisans with major companies, Piece & Co. strives to create consistent employment for thousands of women and positively impact their children and their communities. Piece & Co. ensures success by investing in the artisan groups through business training, technique development, and raw material sourcing, allowing both the artisans and their production to flourish.

I love clean sample bags like this because I discover new natural brands and products that I may not have come across otherwise. Hope you enjoyed reading about my favorites!

38 Weeks Pregnant

38 weeks.jpg

Due Date: April 25, 2017

How far along: 38 weeks

Size of baby: A Winter Melon (approx. 19.6 inches and 6.61 pounds) – according to The Bump app- I love this app by the way! It has some great articles that relate to what you may be experiencing each week. I also love the Ovia app.

About baby: Baby may have about an inch or so of hair already! Did you know that all babies’ eye color are blue, gray or brown at birth? The color will likely change a bit and settle by 1 year of age.

If you have been following along, you may know that baby boy Lane has been breech. Despite acupuncture, chiropractic care, prenatal yoga and all of my funnier efforts including handstands in the pool and lying upside down on an ironing board etc. he did not want to change positions on his own. We even had the version procedure (ECV) at 37 weeks in the hospital and he barely budged with that either!

Read more on the ECV Procedure here… & let’s just say, it wasn’t the most fun experience, but I am glad I gave it a shot.

Because this is my first baby, and there are complications that could come from attempting to birth a first-time breech baby vaginally, my doctor strongly recommended that I have him via C-section, so that’s what we are going to do! Although this is pretty much the farthest thing from my original birth plan of having Lane at a birth center, naturally without any interventions or medications, we have accepted this new path and plan that has been placed before us. It has been a humbling experience realizing that I don’t have quite the control of his birth that I thought I did. I know it will still be beautiful and empowering and we are just so excited to meet him, no matter how he wants to comes into this world!

Maternity clothes: My husband’s t-shirts! 😉

Stretch marks: No stretch marks, that I can see that is 😉 I am still using THE BEST Baby Belly Butter by Nature Bare Body Care. Check out my review here.

Sleep: Sleep is hit or miss. Trying to bank as many hours as possible right now and squeeze in naps when I can. This is easy considering I don’t have any energy whatsoever.

Best moment of this week: Celebrating Easter 🙂

Miss anything: Can’t think of anything this week…I guess I did miss having a mimosa at Easter brunch!

Movement: Still moving quite a bit… He is quite the strong boy now with some powerful kicks and punches and we can’t forget the forceful head movements up into my ribs!

Food cravings: Chocolate and coffee

Anything making you queasy or sick: Contractions and cramping

Gender: BOY

Wedding rings on or off: Wedding band is still on and stays on, but I gave up on my engagement ring.

Mood: Positive and excited! This past week was one of the toughest, (hormones and emotions running wild) but now as I am writing this, I am definitely in a more peaceful, positive place. I have faith that things will happen as they are meant to and am letting go of my fears. It really hit home this week that our lives are about to change completely and that is a lot to take in, but we are so excited for it all. The big day is almost here!

Favorite pregnancy or baby product: Some gifts from family came in the mail this week that I am excited to try out from Natursutten. These natural glass bottles and their highly rated natural rubber newborn pacifier. I have heard great things about this brand. Natursutten® is owned by a mother of three and offers natural products for babies and toddlers. Natursutten wants to make a difference by making parents aware of toxin-free baby products, which ensure a more chemical-free future for our children and for our environment.

Looking forward to: Meeting Baby Lane!!! We love you so much already 🙂

This will be my last update and I wanted to thank you for reading these and for sending your love and support through all of your kind words thus far. It has been so nice to have such a supportive community through Instagram and this blog during my first pregnancy.

Lots of love and good health,

Tasha, The Non-Toxic Newbie

36 Weeks Pregnant

Due Date: April 25, 2017

How far along: 36 weeks and 4 days

Size of baby: A Papaya (approx. 18.7 inches and 5.73 pounds)

How many weeks to go: 3 weeks and 3 days

About baby: Baby’s liver and kidneys are in working order. Circulation and immune systems are basically good to go! Baby is still in the breech position despite all of my unique efforts to get him to turn. I have been receiving acupuncture once a week and doing moxa daily (check out my recent Instagram post for a little more info on moxibustion). I have been going to a chiropractor that specializes in the Webster technique twice a week. Other than that, lots of inversions, handstands underwater in the pool and prenatal yoga. Come on baby, let’s do a flip!

Maternity clothes: Dresses are my go-to and most comfortable attire right now. Most shoes are starting to get pretty tight so I just bought some comfy padded flip flops.

Stretch marks: No stretch marks, that I can see that is 😉 I am still using THE BEST Baby Belly Butter by Nature Bare Body Care. Check out my review here.

Sleep: Sleep is terrible to be honest. Baby is just getting so big that there’s not a lot of room in there and my belly is so hard! It feels like I’m sleeping with a bunch of bricks in there and every time I toss and turn it can be pretty painful. It would definitely help if his hard little head was down instead of pushing against my ribs too!

Best moment of this week: This past week we enjoyed a mini Desert Springs vacation and celebrated my husband’s birthday. It was so nice to get away even just for a few days, have some yummy food and enjoy the resort’s salt water pool and beautiful views.

This is going to sound weird, but another great moment of this past week was going to the Fire Department and getting our car seat installed. I think it’s so nice of them to offer this free service and it’s definitely reassuring now that it’s installed the right way and I know it’s ready to go.

Miss anything: Comfortable sleep and being able to walk without waddling 😉

Movement: Baby boy has still been moving quite a bit. His adjustments are a lot smaller, but I definitely feel him kicking and punching in there. It’s always reassuring and welcome when he checks in to say hello. He loves to kick the chiropractor when I get adjusted. Haha!

Food cravings: Pizza, lime and lemon things…which doesn’t help the heartburn situation.

Anything making you queasy or sick: No

Gender: BOY

Wedding rings on or off: Wedding band is still on and stays on, but I gave up on my engagement ring.

Mood: A little stressed and discouraged, but hopeful…this week has been the toughest yet. I always try to see the light at the end of the tunnel and look at the positive, that we are so blessed and so close to meeting our little Lane, but knowing he is still breech and the complications that come with that has been on my mind constantly and a bit overwhelming. Everything else checks out great though, he is measuring spot on and has a strong heart rate, so if he is healthy, we are happy and very grateful.

Favorite pregnancy or baby product: These bamboo changing pad covers I found on Amazon & these Organic Evening Primrose Oil Capsules which can help the cervix soften and efface as well as help with postpartum recovery. Note: The effects of taking evening primrose oil during pregnancy have not been proven.

Looking forward to: Our one year wedding anniversary next week! We are also going to be wrapping up the nursery this weekend. All furniture is put together, but we are working on some DYI, rustic looking floating shelves and we’ll be hanging pictures and décor.

Lots of love and good health,

Tasha, The Non-Toxic Newbie

Money Saving Tips for Going Non-Toxic

Making the switch to natural, non-toxic products when it comes to beauty, skincare and household items can get expensive and overwhelming. Especially when starting out, there are a lot of different options out there and it’s hard to know where to begin and whether or not you are going to like a certain product before you try them out. Here are just a few tips on how to try new products and make the switch without spending a fortune.

Take Advantage of Free Samples

Free samples are my favorite! They are a great way to try new products before spending the money for full sizes. Instagram is a great way to discover companies that give out free samples. Some require you to pay shipping, others send free samples with an order, or some just send samples for free. Here are just a few that I have taken advantage of:

The Honest Co. Personal Care & Home Cleaning Essentials Trial includes shampoo + body wash, face + body lotion, hand soap, healing balm and multi surface cleaner. Just pay $5.95 for shipping. Note: You will get automatically enrolled in their subscription service which I actually used a few times to stock up on products, but it’s very easy to cancel if you wish to do so. You can push out the subscription as far as you want too, so you don’t have to place an order every month. I also blogged about the Honest Beauty Skincare Trial here.

Farmstead Apothocary Free Sample Pack of their Body Butter, Body Lotion and Face Cream (limit one per household) & no shipping costs!

Citrine Natural Beauty Bar They always include complimentary samples with your purchase which is fun, but just recently they started a Sample Program where you can choose samples of your choice.

Subscribe to Green Beauty Boxes

Green Beauty Boxes are a great way to discover newer non-toxic and natural skincare and makeup products. I have tried a few of these below and the rest I have heard great reviews about. Before I subscribe to a box, I always check their banned ingredients list or their product qualification criteria to make sure it aligns with what I’m looking for. This way I have the utmost confidence that the products are properly vetted and do not contain harmful ingredients that I normally try to avoid.

Glowing Beets Instagram: @glowingbeets

Whole Foods recently released their limited edition clean beauty bag. They release them every year around this time in stores in limited quantity. This year’s contained $90 worth of clean beauty products for $18 dollars. They also ran a special at the same time for their third annual beauty week where all in store cosmetics and facial care were 25% off.

Enter Giveaways on Instagram

Green bloggers and brands do giveaways on Instagram all the time and it’s usually as easy as following the brand and tagging a friend or two in the comments. I haven’t been super successful with these, but hey it’s always worth a shot right?

Look Out For Promotions & Sign Up For Mailing Lists

Some great green beauty brands like 100% Pure for example run some amazing promotions. They recently had one where if you spent $55, you could get your hands on a 6 piece gift set for free plus free shipping. This is a great way to try new products and a crazy good deal! They usually do these type of promotions a few times a year and I’m always on the lookout because they have limited quantity and you have to act fast.

Join mailing lists for the brands you are interested in trying or already love so you can stay on top of their special discounts and promotions.

You can also just scroll through #greenbeauty on Instagram and look for new brands and sales 😉 There are some great Spring Sales happening right now!

Roam The Aisles of Marshalls & TJ Maxx

I have been very successful at discovering some great non-toxic products at Marshalls and TJ Maxx. I always bring my phone along and pull up the ThinkDirty app to check on the toxicity level of new products I haven’t heard of before.

My local stores often have Honest Co. products including shampoo, conditioner, bubble bath, handsoap and toothpaste. I have found Schmidts and other natural deodorant brands. These stores are also great when you are looking for serums and oils. I always go here for Vitamin C serum and Rosehip Oil and can usually fine ones that are cold-pressed and organic.

I always check the household aisle and have found some great all natural dishwashing soap and laundry detergent from brands like Molly’s Suds.

These stores are also great for other green, non-toxic items like toys, organic sheets and bedding, organic baby clothes, cleaning supplies etc. You just have to put in a little work and browse all the aisles to find these hidden gems.

Hope this gave you some good ideas!

Lots of love and good health,

Tasha, The Non-Toxic Newbie
